A visual exploration of the Paris dining scene, with stories, guides, and recommendations from everyday patrons and famous aficionados alike

Paris is a city like no other, beloved by travelers the world over for its incomparable architecture, atmosphere, arts, and, of course, food. The restaurants of Paris are rich with history, culture, and flavor. Whether you’re a frequent visitor to the City of Light with memories of your favorite meals or an armchair traveler dreaming of the cuisine you could discover there, A Table in Paris will take you on a delicious visual journey through the arrondissements that you’ll never forget. In his signature loose and evocative style, artist John Donohue has rendered an incredible sampling of the iconic institutions, hidden gems, and everything in between that make the Paris dining scene one of a kind.

Guided by recommendations from a breadth of locals, visitors, and experts, you’ll discover the places one must visit and the dishes one must sample in pursuit of the perfect Parisian meal. The book also offers space for your Paris dining bucket list, food memories or dreams from each arrondissement, and notes on the establishments featured. Restaurants hold a powerful place in our hearts, and A Table in Paris is a must-have for anyone with epicurean visions of Paris in theirs.

Title: If you love Paris, you will love this book
Review: A review of many of the top eateries in Paris, brought back many memories of trips taken. In a time of pandemic when we Americans are not allowed to travel to France, it’s a great stimulation to begin planning for a trip when the ban is lifted. The illustrations are unique and enjoyable. I also like the fact that the commentaries are were written all by different people from all walks of like, who all have one thing in common…..the love of the city of light, and the food it has to offer.

Title: Charming
Review: Let me get to why only four out of five stars for this charming book right out of the starting gate. I’m seventy four and need glasses to read. At my age, all printed pages, from the news paper to the New Yorker, to this book (!) make me feel suspicious that font size has diminished has diminished in the last 10 years in order to get more words on the page! But i think that’s simply paranoia. What I am alerting to future buyers is that the font size in this book is small. Shockingly small until your eyes get used to it. Frankly, it’s surprising given the fact that the book is so beautifully designed. This book is also not a guide for out of the way bargain spots for travelers on a budget. There are no prices. Instead, it’s a delightfully illustrated compilation of Paris’ most beautiful, cherished and famous restaurants as well as some ‘newer’ establishments which have now become part of accepted fine dining with no financial constraints. I suggest that if you are in any way guided by a modest daily budget, you choose one of these glorious places as an event destination or a place to say goodbye to this beautiful city. All of them, as each person who writes about them suggests, has something that separates them, one from another; all of them sure to be memorable. While this is not a large book, it is in hardback for now and might be cumbersome to travel with. So again, I suggest either the kindle version to ‘take with you’, or decide which to visit before you are on your way. The book also offers some visiting suggestions besides the specific restaurants. Suggestions on the same block or the same neighborhood. It’s on my travel bookshelf, forming part of my research for my next trip.

Title: Such a clever book and perfectly timed
Review: I got this as a gift because my family knows I love Paris and can’t wait to go back there, and with the vaccine rollout looking up, it was perfectly timed to help me plan a return trip! Love the personal touches in the stories and the sweet drawings. Highly recommend.

Review: This is a great book, especially for Paris foodies. The book lists the most well known restaurants in Paris by area and gives a little description or interesting note and has marvelous illustrations.

Title: Unless you’re looking for a book of sketches, skip this volume.
Review: I had an old book that listed excellent Paris bistros, but it was out of date and many of them had closed, so I found this online as a substitute. What a disappointment. The old book had actual menus with food and wine recommendations – a real find. This book has none of that. In fact, it is really just a list of restaurants with a sketch of each and no other information, literally a sentence about each place. No research, seemingly no effort at all, went into writing this book. I was looking for information, not artwork.

Review: The author is also an artist so most of the restaurants recommended had his ink drawings depicting what the outside looked like. And there are plenty of restaurants because the author has included personal selections from friends, chefs, journalists, locals, etc. It’s worth the above-average price because it’s much more interesting than the other guides.

Review: Nicely illustrated, handsome printed and bound.Sadly, Mr. Donohue and his partners have limited their reviews to the most obvious establishments that pander to a particularly American notion of Paris. As such, the book is the ideal companion to NETFLIX’ Emily in Paris. The section devoted to St. Germain features Brassiere Lipp, Café de Flore, Lapérouse & les Deux Magots, elsewhere you find Maxim’s, Bofinger, la Coupole, Café de la Paix and all the others that constitute tourist attractions. One wouldn’t be surprised to hear that they’re secretly owned by Disneyland Paris. The descriptions seem to be copy/pasted from a myriad other books on the very same locations or are brief and nondescript: The one on Au Passage: ‘Small plates and late nights). The overall impression is that this book is as insightful as a day ticket to the Paris metro. Pity.

Review: If you want a book with good recommendations for places to eat in Paris, there are others that are far better. There are numerous placed featured in this book that are mediocre at best, and almost no “gems” that are worthy of top billing. As A. Lobrano says in his review of Paris dining spots, “accountants, not cooks” edit the menus in a number of these places. There is one place mentioned prominently in Donohue’s book with the advice: “It’s easy to go wrong … but this place will set you right.” Now this is a place around the corner from the apartment my wife and I rented for many years. I would go there for my morning café creme (standing at the bar), but lunch or dinner? Never! There are too many places nearby that offer far better food.Another reviewer hit the nail on the head. These are, for the most parts, places geared to American tourists. These are not places that I, or anyone living in Paris, would take someone for a great Parisian dinner. That’s not to say that every place mentioned here is bad — not by a long shot. For example, Les Petits Mitrons and Chez Virginie (p40) are supurb. (And both are a short walk from my Paris apartment.) But note that neither of these places ever offered a table! The former is an excellent patisserie and the latter a very good fromagerie.I returned the book. I thought of keeping it strictly for the drawings, but it wasn’t worth taking up shelf space. (I gave this book 2 stars only for the drawings!)
