Sport in adventure mode

Who has never dreamed of an RPG where the weapons of the character are only muscles, in relation to the player? Honestly, not me! But that’s Nintendo’s main idea in Ring Fit Adventure. The scenario is quite basic but very sporty.

A heroine, to be shaped in our image very basically, falls on a sealed ring one day of jogging outside (that’s a dream right now …). But that ring contained Draco, a huge black dragon in (slightly ridiculous) sports gear surrounded by an evil aura. It had been sealed by Ring, the ring itself, which was once powerful. The goal will be to help him defeat Draco before he wreaks havoc on the world.

To be powerful enough and beat this, there’s nothing like a little sport. Ring gets us in the bath right now: the harder we train, the more powerful our attacks will be! To illustrate this power, our hair is on fire, orange then bright yellow. This variation will give us a better idea of the intensity of our efforts. Be careful not to injure yourself, it is better to do less intense but finish without breakdown!

The adventure mode is divided into several chapters (around twenty according to Nintendo), for around 100 different routes. It’s up to us to go through them to reach the level where Draco is, and defeat him. The adventure mode is therefore rather long, and I am still very far from it!

First thing that is striking is the beauty of the landscapes. A pure moment of escape, before having to start running in place! Ideal in a house or on the ground floor, much less upstairs. The game has an indoor mode, with flexes, but I like it a lot less anyway. I preferred to run in place trying to be discreet. The neighbors have never come to complain, for the moment …

Our character therefore advances according to our leg lift, but we must also hold the Ring-Con straight to target Ring in the game. This one will be used many times: press it to blow from the front and break crates, towards the ground to jump, stretch it to suck coins. As the adventure progresses, other obstacles will come in our way! The Ring-Con will need to be pressed against the abdomen to break large boulders, or serve as a paddle, and trampoline jumps will be done with the strap set.

Who says RPG also says combat, experience points, money, outfits and upgrades. And that’s exactly what Ring Fit Adventure offers against this sporty background. Before joining Draco on the final level of the chapter, each course is full of monsters to fight, with sports techniques of course.

Fighting is not avoidable, and requires us to face between 1 and 5 different monsters. Each monster has its specificities, attacks, and weaknesses. Its color gives a good indication of the attack to be made. Thus, the yellows will be susceptible to attacks involving the abs, the bruises for the legs, the reds for the arms, and the greens are combated using yoga techniques. As for black, they resist all attacks as well. And all can attack you, you will have to defend yourself with your abs.

Before embarking on a course, the menu can give us indications of the techniques to favor. And the more we advance in history, the more powerful techniques we have. It is thus possible to vary from one course to another, according to what is recommended, or simply according to our preference.

Knowing that each ability takes more or less time to recharge, has a certain attack, and can hit 1 to 5 monsters at the same time. A little early battle strategy that shouldn’t be taken lightly, but which adds to the RPG side of the title.

The fights and actions during the course will earn you experience points. As well as the warm-up at the start. With these points, you will gain power and defense, and you will get new techniques. In addition, the objects and coins collected on the course will be able to serve you to buy outfits or produce various smoothies to heal you or increase certain attacks.

What to exercise while having fun

If you don’t feel like going on an adventure, but rather doing some focused exercise, but still keeping the fun aspect, Ring Fit Adventure also offers mini-games. You may encounter them during the adventure, but they are all available a la carte as well.

All the mini-games work different muscles, the choice is yours according to your preference or your need. Make pottery using your thighs by combining squats and arm pressure, balancing act by walking slowly and using your abs to make sure that the bar touches the points, a mole slap with the robots to using your arms, or even drive an adductor and make it jump by forcing on your adductors …

The list of mini-games is quite long and varied. It allows you to change a little, even while working the same types of muscles. I like it a lot because it’s more fun than just exercises!

The purpose of these mini-games is twofold. Work your muscles again and again, but also get the best score! Then compare your results with your friends. A little extra challenge for those who like it!

Recently, the game has had a new mode that is very cool, although less sporty (although …). A rhythm game, always with the accessories provided! Either with the pressures and stretches of the Ring-Con with the arms, or by pressing the Ring-Con on the chest. Either way, the legs can be used for some lowering, but this is quite rare.

The music is from the adventure mode, but they also added music from the great Nintendo games! My favorite, Jump Up, Super Star! of Super Mario Odyssey. But there’s also the underground version of Mario, a Medley of music from Zelda, Splatoon 2, and Wii Fit. A little nostalgia, which does not hurt, and always preferable to the music of the adventure mode.

And if you just want to work certain specific muscles for a short period of time, you can select a more classic exercise, among those you get in adventure mode. What you exercise, or do a little personal session.

The map program

But if you want to exercise more intensely and for longer, without spending too much time on dialogues, or on the choice of exercises, you have the program à la carte! It’s up to you to create your program, with a selection of exercises and mini-games. With the latest update, there are even simple racing sessions, identical to the adventure mode without all the obstacles and fights.

You can create about twenty different programs. They may take a bit of time to set up, but once you’re done, you don’t have to go back to them. Up to 10 exercises, of adjustable intensity.

For my part, I created a general program, another more abs, and another more legs and buttocks. With running, intense and flexible exercises, and a rhythm game on Super Mario Odyssey to finish in style!

My little programs

It took a while before I got into this mode. But I find it even more complete than the adventure mode. We go through the exercises without having cuts due to the dialogues, the choice of the chapter, the purchases at the store …

A full-fledged workout, each program created begins with a warm-up session (always the same), and ends with a personalized stretching session.
