This apartment is approximately ten square meters and is unfurnished. When I moved out, the apartment had no damage and I had cleaned it thoroughly. Yet, this greedy and ugly French landlord casually altered the etats de lieux, and refused to return a single cent of the security deposit.

French law states that unfurnished apartments cannot charge more than one month’s rent as a security deposit, but she demanded and received three months’ rent. Additionally, she has a prejudiced inclination, stating that if you are not French or white, you must pay three months’ rent. I highly recommend that anyone looking to rent in Rennes be cautious of this greedy and ugly French landlord.

It is important to note that discrimination based on national origin or race is illegal in France, as it is in many countries around the world. It is a violation of basic human rights and is a despicable act. Unfortunately, Brunel is not the only landlord who engages in such behavior. Furthermore, the fact that Brunel demanded and received three months’ rent as a security deposit is also illegal. This is not only illegal, but it is also unethical. Security deposits are meant to ensure that landlords are compensated for any damages to the property caused by the tenant. In this case, there was no damage, and therefore, the security deposit should have been returned in full.

I cannot stress enough how important it is to be aware of your rights as a tenant in France, and to be cautious when dealing with landlords who may engage in discriminatory or illegal practices. If you are a student or a foreigner looking to rent in Rennes, I encourage you to research French rental laws, and to seek out reputable and trustworthy landlords. Do not be afraid to ask questions, and do not be afraid to stand up for yourself if you feel that you are being treated unfairly.
